The Cayman Islands 29.08.2011 - 05.09.2011

As on every budget travel the Cayman Islands are in the top positions, we could not miss out to go there as well. I also wanted to retrieve my hidden money from underneath the palm tree, whilst I was there.

Arne (you know Arne, right?!) picked us up from the airport. As usually, he only came with half of the car. Actually that's not true. The door was lying on the back seat and we had to move it to be able to get all our backpacks into the car.

We had 7 days in paradise and Arne managed to get some days off in a row and that promised a lot of fun. We had BBQ and drank some beer and had a good laugh. In the middle of the night we took the jeep and took it for a spin. We ended up to stand in the warm sea in the rain and drink beer. What a day! We did almost everyday snorkeling and the condition of the weather got better by the day, as there was a big heavy rain before we arrived which kept the water cloudy at the beginning of our stay.

Andrea came on Thursday as well and we haven't seen her since she visited us together with Arne in Atlanta about 1 1/2 years ago.

Arne was able to get us the room from one of his coworker where we could stay. Thank you for letting us stay at your home!! As the sun got stronger and stronger, we also managed to get a little sunburn (again). Everyday it got hotter and hotter and it was so much that your body didn't really wanted to move anymore. The only thing that helps is to drink beer. That's what we did... Unfortunately the jet skis didn't work. Perhaps that was better to prevent us from doing anything stupid.

Chrisy and I did a day trip to Rum Point where we relaxed in the shade. The ride in the BMW through the island was very interesting and we got a little idea about the island life. On one day we went with a tour to Stingray City. It was only 30min by boat and we came to this shallow sandbank. For many years passing fishers threw the rests from cleaning the fish over board. Now, when we arrived around 30-40 stingrays were swimming around. We all jumped into the hip deep water. Instantly the first stingrays came and strived along or legs in the hope to get some fish from us.

Our captain explained us how to handle and touch the stingrays. He also told us which we could kiss and which not (as some of them where his girlfriends...) It was an amazing experience to be so close to this friendly and elegant animals. The time passed by so fast and after feeding them we went back on the boat. We went to another 2 spots where we could snorkel and come close to many different fishes. We had a great time. On the way back one person from the boat jumped of during the ride to pick up a sea star from the ground of the sea. A beautiful orange color and a hard body was what we could experience first hand.

The different snorkling trips we did with Andrea and Arne from the shore were good fun. We did go to different areas including small walls, a wreck, a little coral garden and so on.

On our last day we had a fantastic BBQ at the beach and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

It was hard to leave, but we knew we were about to see many more new exciting places in this world.

A quick stop in Florida,

To come from Cayman Island to Mexico we had to fly to Miami. As the flight arrived at 6.45pm we did not get a connecting flight the same day toTLC (Toluca). We also only got a flight from Fort Lauderdale. I already saw ourselves sleeping on the airport. Luckily Andrea flew on the same day back from Cayman and arrived a couple of hours earlier. She offered us to pick us up from the airport and that we could stay at her place for the night. So for the evening we went over to family Buhl's residence. A nice Thai meal awaited us already and we enjoyed it very much. Her dad is an expert in cent ran and south America as he travelled and worked in many areas. It was most interesting and a lot of fun to talk to him.

Next morning she would bring us in FFL to the airport. As life is not a fairy land, we also still had to pick up our "houses" roof frame (a tent pole which broke on the second last night in the smokies) from a FEDEX location, as it couldn't be delivered due to a wrong address. Tztztztz... So, how can you check in, in time and pick something up that "official" opens after the time you are supposed to be at the airport?!? Hmmm. I trusted the lady on the hotline when she told me that the office opens at nine... So the plan was that Andrea would drop us at the airport so we can check in (as this didn't work online as well) and she would drive to pick up the parcel and then come back to the airport and give us the pole before proceeding through security. ( hopefully they will let us go through with the pole and not think that we might plan an attack with it on the plane... You never know...). It all come different and everything went very smooth, as we were able to pick it up together. Sorry Andrea for making you run late for classes. Let us know if you need a notice for your teacher... Thank you for your hospitality and help with everything!

On the below link you can see some photos from land and water of Cayman Island. Finally the won Flip camera came to action. Thank you to the St Regis raffle we were able to take these pictures.
