11.12.2012 Tupiza, Bolivia

In the middle of the night our bus arrived in Tupiza. It was 2.30am and everything seemed so dark. We walked a couple of blocks, but all our attempts to find a hostel which would open their doors for us seemed unsuccessful. Finally a door opened for us and we were able to sleep for a couple of hours. After this rest we explored the city and searched for an operator for the "Salar de Uyunin" tour. There are many different agency, but it took us some time to decide. So we went first for a cowboy experience and went horseback riding.

The landscape was like the wild west. It is actually the place of the last stand of the robber duo "Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid". After one robbery they got caught in a nearby town. The red stone formation and the cactus here and there made us feel like in the movies. Strangest formation with names like "diabolos porta" were on our way.

My horse did most of the time what I wanted. Chrisy's not so much. It was a young mother and the little kid followed us all the way. It didn't get any better and Chrisy changed the horse which made it a little better. We went for a 3 hrs excursion. Our far end point was a canyon in which we climbed a little.

It was a hot day and the few attempts of my horse to ride a little faster were very welcome, however rather painful as I never came into the same rhythm as the horse. I could imagine that it must have looked quite entertaining for any experienced rider! For any offers for some lessons, please reach out to me! I definitely would have enjoyed a fast ride through these scenery!

There are many more mountains, valleys and gorges to explore. You can do 3-4 day horse tours and ride to some really spectacular places. Entire forests of cactus can be found in this area.

After our return we wanted to book our trip to Uyuni, but all the tours were full. So we went for a Pizza in Tupiza. It was a really good and big pizza. Whilst we were sitting there and eating, the lady from our hostels agency came into the restaurant. She looked all over town for us, as another tour offer opened and she wanted to ensure that we were still interested. She must have been on the search for a while, as there are many restaurants in town. When we got back to the hostel we made our final arrangements and knew that we were able to start into a surreal area of this world the next day and were very excited about it!
