07.01.2012 Salta, Argentina.

We arrived in the early morning hours and were able to get a room in a nice hostel. After a refreshing shower and a little morning nap, we went to have a look around in town. As Argentina has a siesta time, 87% of the shops are closed from 13.00-17.00. So except of window shopping, there is not a lot to do. We bought some food for a coffee and cake time, As we didn't find too much, or overpriced in town and returned to the hostel. There we met some Australians and an English couple and and when they heard about our plan to go to the museum of the mummies, they joined us on the way.

It was a museum of kids which were sacrificed and buried on the top of a mountain close by. During the Mayan times this sometimes happened to ask the gods for a good harvest and prosperity for the people and leaders. As they were found over 6000m in a ice-cold environment they were in fantastic condition. All the different objects, cloths and position they were found in were explained very well.

After such an experience we all decided to have dinner together and we bought food and wine for a BBQ on the rooftop terrace of the hostel. We got loads of meat and I made some German style potato salad and started cooking. It was a feast. We all loved it and later a French couple joined us as well. They introduced us into the argentinian secret of Mate tea.

The next day we walked to the house mountain of Salta. There is also a gondola going up or you take the 1717 steps. On the top you have a little bit of everything. The ice-cream vendors, arts and craft vendors, a restaurant, an outdoor gym (?!?) and also the option to take a bike to go downhill again. We walked again even though it was a boiling hot day.

We were to stay on the campground of Salta for the night. We had to walk a fair bit until we found the right bus stop which would bring us to the address. At least we saw a little bit more of the city.

A swimming pool was there integrated with the campground. When we checked in, the lady said that there were still a lot of people, but they would go later on. When we came around the corner we knew what a lot of people are and what a big pool is!

This pool had the size of 8 large pools combined. Several thousand people where in and around the pool. There were tends and BBQ's all around the place. Everywhere were speakers with different kind of music and you could see people grilling and eating. After a while searching we found a place for our small tend and a table. When it started to get dark most of the people started leaving. We started a fire and grilled our big piece of meat and drank a bottle of good Argentina wine with it. The air didn't cool down in the night and it was hot all the time. Next day we spent until the late afternoon at the pool, made our laundry washing and left towards the terminal. As we didn't know which bus we had to take, we stood there for a while and finally decided for one of them to get close to the terminal. And this was around 2.5km away. So we walked with our backpacks through town and arrived at the terminal. I wanted to get the ticket for our online code we received for our bus from the company we were traveling with to Mendoza. When I asked the clerk, he referred me to another company. When I was there and waited in line again, they referred me to a third company. As it was only 15min till departure of our bus, I had to cut the line and finally got the tickets in my hands. My heart was racing, as I was worried we would miss the bus. But we managed to be at the right platform in time. And we were ready for another long ride to Mendoza.
