08.05.2012 Whale shark in Koh Tao, Thailand

We walked this morning into several diving shops to find out if there were any dives available for the day. We found a couple we liked and we just left one which said he had his morning boat leaving in 30 min, when we turned around and went back into the shop. John at the "Easy Diver" hooked us up, did all the paperwork and gave us the equipment.

20 min later we were on the boat to the "shark island" dive spot. When we arrived there was already a boat and was shouting that they saw a whale shark. I remembered my uncle Walter in Kenya who also told everybody he met in a national park that he saw a lion "that way", and didn't have too high hopes. So we finished our briefing and went into the water.

After a smooth decent we followed a nice coral formation when John gave us the sign for shark. I saw a huge back fin in the a little cloudy water. I was very excited and even when the fin disappeared again shortly after, I still was excited. I kicked my fins a little harder and then the back fin and a little more reappeared again. My air pressure dropped a little bit! I kicked even harder and then we had full view on a beautiful whale shark it was a pretty small one with it's 4 to 4.5m and had loads of fish hanging under him.

What an unbelievable view. We hung around with him for probably 5-10min before we had to resurface. A couple of other boats with tons of snorklers came as well to the spot. After 10 min outside he came back and we jumped back into the water with our goggles and fins on. He was not bothered by all the fuzz around him and he came straight at me. It is so unbelievable.

We stayed at the dive spot just around the small island in the hope to see him again on our second dive as well. Again we had many beautiful coral formations with christmas trees, soft corals and many fishes including a big school of barracudas.
It would have been out of the world to have another contact, but we still enjoyed the dive and experience.

Enjoy the Underwater world here.
