08.02.2012 Hawke Bay region, New Zealand

We followed Sara's car first to her apartment in Napier, so she could pick up some of her belongings, as she also will stay at her parents place. James got his own car and drove to Sara's parents house and I drove with Sara and Robert followed to the Supermarket where we bought more bottles of wine and snacks. On this trip Sara also pointed out the house she bought and will move in, in the near future.

On the drive to Hastings, I found out that it was Sara's Mom birthday today and they were about to serve dessert when we called. Everybody waited for us. We got all introduced and gave our Birthday wishes and we felt awful to have interrupted such a special dinner. We all had the ice cream with marshmallows and fruit together and had a great chatty evening with different wines from the region. We had a great shower there and were happy to sink into soft beds with crisp sheets.

We had a slow start in the morning. We made breakfast, did all our laundry and waited for the rain to stop. I think we left the house around 2 pm to go to Napier, so Taylor could call home and use the Internet. Rahel, Robert and I went to town to walk a little around.

In February 1931 was a very bad earthquake that destroyed the city center completely. Despite the economy crises they rebuild the whole city in Art Deco style with it's pastel colors it calls itself the Art Deco capital and we just missed by a week the festival where everybody dresses in the fashion from that period.

We did not have too much time in the city, so we strolled quickly around and took some pictures. Our plan was to go also to some wineries and to prepare dinner for Sara and her family.

Somebody getting ready for the Art Deco Festival the following weekend.

Time seemed to really be running so we only had the chance to visit one winery, the Ngatarawa winery. Unfortunately was the tasting not as informative as hoped, but the Shiraz was amazing. We bought a bottle to bring to Sara's parents and to drive back to have early dinner, as Sara had to go to rehearsals.
Robert made "Käsespätzle" and we prepared the salad. We set up the table and had all a lovely dinner together.

In the evening Robert and I went to the Irish pub in Napier to meet Sara after rehearsals. We finished our cider, drove to the supermarket to get more bottles of wine and crisps.
It turned out to be a fun night with way too much to drink, a lot of laughs and old stories from the St. Regis Aspen. I felt sorry for Sara that she had to get up early and we could sleep in. I cannot even remember when we went to bed, but before we did, Rahel had the idea to take a scary picture. You can see the result below.
