17.03.2012 MONA, Tasmania, Australia

We planned one more day in Hobart to see Mona (Museum of Old and New Art), also called the "sex and death" museum. We heard a lot about it and it was recommended to spend one day there. The owner is millions heavy who made his money with gambling (counting cards). He likes art and collected over the years many pieces and decided to put his collection in a public museum and create the BEST museum in the world. In the beginning entry was free and now it is still free for Tasmanian residences.

So we walked to the ferry dock area and bought a ticket for the 11 am ferry to the museum. This ferry is part of the experience and it only goes from the dock to the museum.

As it was Saturday, there was also a market outside the museum with food and live music. The tents were all decorated nicely and lined up and from far away it looked like a pink dragon.

The museum is very controversial and not all area are suitable for children.

Above: All squares are drawers and you can open them and then you hear different voices say "I love you".

Even the restrooms are interesting, in one you can watch old Charlie Chaplin movies and in another one you can see how you do your own business!

Tattoos on pig skin.

After so much art we took a lunch break outside where we bought food from the market and got comfortable on beanbags.

For this mummy we had to queue as only 3 persons maximum were allowed to enter. The room was very dark and you had to follow the path well to fall not into the water that was left and right of the step stones. It was a wired feeling to be alone in the dark room with the exhibit.

Of course there is much more we saw and we certainly spent the whole day there, but you still need to discover the museum by yourself.
Here are some more pictures: Mona
